Phil and Don had met Hollies Allan Clarke and Graham Nash as far back as 1960, waiting outside a Manchester theatre for an autograph. "Don and Phil Everly talked to us for what seemed like half an hour," Nash later recalled. "Instead of just patting us on the head, they stood and talked to me and Allan Clarke, encouraging us. It changed my life." Without the Everlys, no Hollies harmonies; without the Hollies, no Abba harmonies. The Beatles, the Bee Gees, Simon and Garfunkel, all of them owe a great debt to Phil and Don. Modern pop would have sounded very different without the Everly Brothers.

MARINA DEL DENNIS
by Bill Bentley (1983)
"My dog smells queers," he says
The voice scraped dry from swigging malted sand
He's the dream kid at the tail end of America
Burnt red to a scruffy crisp
High and dry behind the wheel of a baby-blue T-bird
Now left to listen for a silent station on his holy radio
No way would Popeye be too proud of this beached boy
Prowling the street named after our most famous father George
"Colonel Smirnoff," I say
A southpaw living on cottage cheese and bad blood
Every day it's the same
Two eyes that go out with the tide while he salutes an invisible flag
No stripes, no stars, just a shaggy dog bar backed by an endless buzz
So what's left? Stick Old Glory in his skull
A few lit sparklers in each arm
And turn him toward the ocean for one last lonely dance
But drummer Dennis, the sweet and sour Marina menace
Has it figured different
There's no one behind him
No mosquitoes to swim in his ears or words to rain on his heart
That's the way it has to be when you're nearer the end than the start
"Don't worry baby, there's still the sun," he barks
I listen, he looks, we smile
While the surf applauds its most famous friend
Then with a wicked grin to match the new moon he asks,
"The dog smells junkies
How much for the dog?"
There are no takers tonight in Marina del Rey

Nevertheless, mindful of the nation's image overseas, China's government issued a 64-page Handbook for Civilised Tourism in October containing safety tips and etiquette rules for its citizens abroad. Along with some useful advice, the booklet's rules include: "Don't steal the lifejacket from the airplane", "Don't leave footprints on toilet seats", "Don't take more than you can eat from breakfast buffets" and "Don't dry your smalls over hotel lampshades". There are also some country-specific tips, such as warning travellers to the UK that asking British people if they've eaten is "deemed impolite", and advising female tourists to wear earrings while in Spain, otherwise "they will be considered naked".
